We have just come home from Richmond in North Yorkshire, after completing just over half of Wainwright's Coast to Coast walk. In all, we walked about a hundred miles from St Bees on the Cumbrian coast to Reeth, in eight days. I/we thought that we were quite healthy and robust, but the only member of our party who was not habitually worn-out was Dolly the dog. Serious outdoor types are fond of saying that there is no such thing as bad weather only unsuitable clothing, I am inclined to disagree. For most of our trip; we set-off in, walked in and arrived in, varying degrees of heavy rain. It was windy and for most of the time the visibility on high ground was quite poor. It wasn’t cold, but it certainly was discouraging. None of this is to say that when the clouds broke we were not rewarded by some beautiful views of unspoiled countryside that I had not expected to see in England, just that I think our stay had more in common with army training than our other holidays.
